:: Candle Posting #71 :: Salgirah Mubarak :: What Gift Should We Submit To Our Beloved Mowla? ::

Bismillahir Rahmanir Rahim
In the name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful.

Ya Ali Madad. On the most auspicious occasion of 73rd birthday of our beloved NOOR Mowlana Shah Karim Al-Hussaini Hazir Imam (a.s.), let us first reflect on the following ayat from Surah Yasin:

"Verily We, (and) We (alone) give life unto the dead, and We write down what they have sent before them and (even) their footprints (which they leave behind them): And everything have We confirmed into a *Manifesting Imam (Guide)." (Holy Qur'an Surah Yasin:12, S.V. Mir Ahmed Ali's translation).

*Said the Holy Prophet: "He who died while he recognized not the Imam of the Age, certainly died he the death of ignorance." (Note from Holy Qur'an, S.V. Mir Ahmed Ali's translation, page 1318).

Let us now reflect upon the concept of Panj Tan Pak which is captured on a beautiful card prepared by Maroom Alwaez Rai Amiraly Amlani (may his soul rest in eternal peace, ameen):

In view of the above knowledge, let us offer gratitude for being continually guided by Light of Imamat and reflect upon Mowla's immense favours upon us for the past 52 years, i.e., from 1957 to the present. In one of the Salgirah cards sent to me by one of my readers, a question was asked: "What birthday present can we give our Imam"? I will try to answer this question in this posting.

Part 1: What is the purpose of our existence?

Now let us read Rumi's perspective on this topic:

"Without doubt man is compounded of a body that is base, base, base; and a spirit that is noble, noble, noble. God the Exalted brought these two together through His perfect Power. A hundred thousand wisdoms are manifested from that noble spirit, and a hundred thousand darknesses from this gross body. That is why God said to the angels, "See, I am creating a mortal of clay. When I have shaped him and breathed My Spirit into him, fall you down, prostrating yourselves to him (Holy Quran 38:72-3)". He connected the body to dark clay and the spirit to the breath of His own Spirit, so that the light and divine Breath would make this dark clay its instrument for righteousness, justice, and guarding God's Trust; so that it might be a means of salavation, elevation, and high degrees. The purpose was not that the dark clay, through its greed for the light of "I have breathed My spirit into him", should make the lamp its instrument for treachery and theft. When a thief comes with a lamp, he takes the better goods.

On the contrary, the lamp and candle of Breath-Spirit should illuminate the clay of the body with light of religion and hold it back from its greed for clay, ignorance and heaviness. "So he whose intellect dominates his sensuality is higher than the angels, and he whose sensuality dominates his intellect is lower than the beasts." (Maktûbât 95: 99/189-190)"

Part 2: What are the Three Broad Objectives of NOOR Mowlana Hazir Imam?

Noor Mowlana Hazir Imam has articulated three groups of Jamati activities that can give him real happiness on his birthday. These are:
  1. Unity in the Jamat;
  2. Regularity in Jamati work; and
  3. Living according the Shia Imami Ismaili Muslim tradition.
Over the past 52 years, Noor Mowlana Hazir Imam has emphasized the balance between Din and Duniya, the balance between body, soul and (higher) intellect, and in the Golden Jubilee raised the bar through the following prayer: "And I pray that you may live in peace with spiritual enlightenment to guide you." In order to address the three broad objectives, we now have to weigh everything with the scale of higher spiritual enlightenment.

Part 3: What Should We Do To Meet the Three Broad Objectives of NOOR Mowlana Hazir Imam?

There are numerous activities that one can perform to meet the three broad objectives and some of the most important ones are captured in the following wish list.

  1. Ya Mowla, empower us with inspiration, courage, knowledge and wisdom to:

    • become staunch obedient, farmanbardari momins;

    • be staunch in the submission of dasond of resources, time and knowledge;

    • be regular in the recitation of Holy Dua on time and in congregation;

    • be regular in performing bandagi (ibadat), i.e., in performing the luminous prayer at the luminous time with the luminous word (bol, ism-i azam or any other name of Ali Zaman);

    • perform noble deeds (nek amal);

    • perform unconditional service to Khudavand, the Jamat and humanity at large;

    • strengthen our faith through the blessing of spiritual particles of faith
      (Ruh-ul iman);

    • excel in secular education and also deepen our knowledge and understanding of our holy faith;

    • keep our hearts filled with dhikr;

    • abstain from committing sins;

    • perform tauba and seek forgiveness of our sins;

    • be patient, humble, grateful and authentic; and

    • be united at the level of our families, our Jamats and the global Jamat.

  2. Ya Mowla, bestow luminous (noorani), spiritual (ruhani) and material (jismani) barakat and tayid (help) upon us;

  3. Ya Mowla, grant salvation to all departed souls;

  4. Ya Mowla, grant us a light in our hearts, a light in our souls, a light in our ears, a light in our eyes, a light in our tongues, a light in our hair, a light in our flesh, a light in our skin, a light in our nerves, a light in our blood, a light in our bones, a light above us, a light below us, a light on our right, a light on our left, a light behind us and a light in front of us;

  5. Ya Mowla, have mercy and create Sunshine in our hearts with your NOOR, and make us earthly angels so that your Light would work at its full potential in our hearts, souls and intellects; and

  6. Ya Mowla, bestow upon us the blessing of being Imam conscious at all times and give us the wisdom to only perform deeds which will lead to the salvation of our souls (Jêvi tê karni-e jivdo chhutê, têvi karni kijê sneh).

May the Salgirah of our beloved NOOR Mowlana Hazir Imam (a.s.) bring material and spiritual peace, light, barakat, tayid (help) and a golden noorani didar in our foreheads! Ameen.

:: Candle Posting #72 :: Why Should We Only Obey NOOR Mowlana Hazir Imam? ::

Bismillahir Rahmanir Rahim
In the name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful.

Ya Ali Madad! I have taken a sufi story from the book entitled "When you hear hoofbeats think of a zebra" by Shems Friedlander and have augmented it with an ayat from the Holy Qur'an and its Ismaili tawil with the hope that these will increase our conviction in the belief of our true Imam who is present and living (Noor Mowlana Hazir Imam).

Part 1: The Sufi Story:

Let us first read the story about 'The Search for Truth' (pages 79-80):

"There's a story about a sheikh who was walking with one of his murids, near a huge field. In the field there was a man who was digging holes. The man had dug two hundred holes two feet deep. Observing this, the murid asked, "O my sheikh, what is he doing?"

"I don't know. Let us ask him," the sheikh answered. They called him over, and asked what was the purpose of digging so many holes just two feet deep.

"I'm looking for water," the man said.

The sheikh told him, "It's unlikely that you will find water by digging two hundred holes that are only two feet deep. You have a better chance of finding water if you dig one hole two hundred feet deep."

When you choose a path, if your heart responds to that path, whatever it might be, and you have a true teacher, dig in that hole. By jumping from one path to another, you may touch the periphery of a lot of things, but you'll just obtain surface knowledge. Accepting a path is a commitment. It is like digging a two-hundred-foot-deep hole. When you dig one hole, when you accept one teaching, whatever it might be, you also have to understand that in digging that hole there are many obstacles. You'll find stones, stumpts, roots, mud, and clay. At times it will be easy and at times it will be difficult. If you keep on digging, and the path is true, with help of Allah you will find water. You will come to knowledge and the Truth.

This is important to realize, because for many years there have been many offerings. But once you've decided on a Path, dig it until you're certain that it's not for you or you've found the Truth. The search for Truth is often more important than the Truth itself."

Part 2: Pertinent Ayat from the Holy Qur'an):

"Ya maAAshara aljinni waal-insi ini istataAAtum an tanfuthoo min aqtari alssamawati waal-ardi faonfuthoo la tanfuthoona illa bisultanin"
(Holy Qur'an 55:33)

"O ye assembly of Jinns and men! If it be ye can pass beyond the zones of the heavens and the earth, pass ye! not without authority shall ye be able to pass!"

Credit: http://www.sacred-texts.com/isl/quran/index.htm

Part 3: Ta'wil of words 'Abwâb al-Jannah' (The eight gates of paradise):

"Study carefully verse (55:33) in which is mentioned the journey of the spiritual heavens and earth. This journey, although it is extremely difficult, is not impossible. You can accomplish this journey through "sultan". "Sultan" means guide, proof, power, overpowering, authority or king, namely the Imam, in whom all useful meanings are encompassed. That is to say that, it is the luminous recognition of the Imam which encompasses everything."
[Source: Tawil 26: A Thousand Wisdoms, pp. 31-32]

Synthesis:
Each one of us has follow the firmans of the Holy Imam with conviction and practice dhikr and bandagi so the doors to the spiritual and luminous worlds open up. Real success lies in making the inward journey from the physical world through the spiritual and luminous worlds into the world of oneness under the guidance of the True Imam. This path also leads to the creation of Sunshine in one's heart and a Golden Noorani Didar in one's forehead.

Prayer without action becomes pride. Good actions, piety, submission of dasond and enlightenment generate fuel within ourselves which would propel our souls into the spiritual and luminous worlds. Therefore, let us act and pray to become first category pure mu'mins like Salmân-i Fârsi in the time of our present and living Imam, NOOR Mowlana Shah Karim Al-Hussaini (a.s.).

:: Candle Posting #73 :: "To Be" or "To Have"? ::

Bismillahir Rahmanir Rahim
In the name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful.

Ya Ali Madad! This is the first posting for 2010. First of all, I would like to wish all of you a Happy New Year! May NOOR Mowlana Hazar Imam bless you and your loved ones with joy, happiness, prosperity, inner peace and perfect balance!

A rock pile ceases to be a rock pile the moment a single man contemplates it,
bearing within him the image of a cathedral."

-- Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, Flight to Arras

Part 2: Some Quotations on Bandagi and Balance
  1. Men may be divided almost any way we please, but I found the most useful distinction to be made between those who devote their lives to conjugating the verb "to be", and those who spend their lives conjugating the verb "to have."
    -- Sydney J. Harris (Readers' Digest Quotable Quotes: Wit and wisdom for all occasions, 1971. p.67)

  2. "To achieve worldly prosperity is necessary but it more essential to excel in spiritual progress. To attend to worldly business is incumbent but the affairs of the next world are important than this. This should never be forgotten."
    -- Noor Mowlana Sultan Muhammad Shah, Nairobi, 30-3-1945

  3. "I do not want my spiritual children to forget that life on earth is but a very short passage in eternity, and you must not believe that you are here for what is only one existence and thereafter you have to account for nothing."
    -- Noor Mowlana Hazar Imam, Lahore, 25-11-1964

  4. "The tendency during your lifetime, during your children's lifetime, will be to ignore the spiritual side of their lives, this will be the tendency. None of you must ignore this, you will be unhappy and your children will be unhappy, because it is not possible to live and not practise one's faith, nor do Ibadat (bandagi) and yet be happy."
    -- Noor Mowlana Hazar Imam, Dacca, 5-12-1964

  5. "As the material world around you becomes less meaningful, less significant, less important, let the spiritual world become more and more predominant in your lives, so that by the end of your lives you have made that Link very, very short."
    -- Noor Mowlana Hazar Imam, Dacca, 18-11-1977

  6. "It is said in a Hadith-i qudsi: "O My servant! Obey me, I will make you like My Image (mithal = surat-i Rahman) everliving that you will never die, mighty that you will never be humiliated and rich that you will never be needy." (Arba rasa'il Isma'iliyyah, p.15). This is the teaching of the paradise of knowledge (obtained through bandagi, i.e., meditation of ism-i azam) and the greatest glad news."
    -- A Thousand Wisdoms, Tawil number 77, p.53.

:: Candle Posting #74 :: Dhikrs for the Ascent of the Soul ::

Bismillahir Rahmanir Rahim
In the name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful.

Ya Ali Madad! In this posting, I would like to present the mechanism of the ascent of the soul and relate it to different forms of Divine Remembrance or dhikr-i Ilahi. Let us first study the conceptual model of the ascent of the soul:

Part 1: The Conceptual Model of the Ascent of the Soul:
The conscience of terrestrial man is the workshop of soul and intellect. It is called the centre of intellectual and spiritual change (inqilab) and is called 'heart' (qalb) by Wise Qur'an. Qalb (heart) means 'to turn around, turn upwards, turn upside down' in Qur'anic terminology. Physically, heart is a hollow muscular organ found in the left side of the chest which, by rhythmical contraction and expansion forces the blood through the circulatory system of vertebrates. In psychology and literary usage, heart is the fount of man's emotion and deepest feelings. When it is used in the sense of 'intellect' as well as in the sense of 'spiritual intuition', it is the conscience of man. The word qalb (heart) in the Holy Qur'an is used in the latter sense and I will use it from here onwards. All the powers of good and evil are linked to the workshop of qalb, in which the intellect, rational soul and sensory soul work together.

Fig. 1. The ascent of the soul and its spiritual and intellectual resurrection.

Part 2: What is the purpose of open dhikr?
The dhikr that we perform loudly is called open remembrance (Dhikr-i jâli). Open dhikr tasbis are incorporated in our tariqah practices and in our personal search. The open dhikr can be performed individually or collectively. This practice is the first step in the path of spiritual journey — the journey which starts from the outside and aims to penetrate the spiritual world which is hidden inside each one of us. Open remembrance also helps the soul to progress and prepares it for hidden remembrance.

Part 3: What is the purpose of hidden dhikr?
The dhikr that we perform silently is called hidden remembrance (Dhikr-i khafi). Hidden dhikr tasbis are also incorporated in our tariqah practices and in our personal search. The hidden dhikr is performed collectively during congregation, e.g., in the Mushkil Asaan tasbis or individually at any time during the day and the night. The practice is the second step in the path of spiritual progress. Hidden remembrance helps the soul to progress and prepare it for bandagi (meditation).

Part 4: What is the purpose of bandagi?
Bandagi is a special luminous dhikr performed at a luminous time with a luminous word (Supreme Name of God — Ism-i Azam). In the personal spiritual search, the light of God, the Prophets and the Imam of the age is potentially encompassed in the sacred Ism-i Azam. This sacred word is the spirit and light of the Qur'an, the light of guidance and the light of faith. It enlightens the path of murids of the Holy Imam.

Part 5: What does bandagi do?
When a believer succeeds in achieving a high status through hidden remembrance with Ism-i Azam at a luminous time, the doors of Divine blessings open and the spirit and spiritual entities converse with him. This unprecedented and unique world, which is filled with spirituality and luminosity, remains in front of the believer day and night. This subtle universe which remains in the forehead of a believer is the opposite of the exoteric and material world because everything in it is alive. The spiritual elevation and the intellectual perfection of the personal world can be achieved if a believer practices Ism-i Azam and follows in the foot-steps of the Noor Mawlana Hazar Imam.

Part 6: How is bandagi performed?
In order to awaken the inner senses, it is necessary to impose silence on the external senses. Therefore, hidden remembrance with the supreme name is performed in quiet places where the lights are dimmed, external movement is restricted and all the attention is focused on internal senses. The Supreme Name is silently recited with the inner tongue at a high speed initially to keep out the waswasah, i.e., disturbing thoughts. In addition, the inner ear has to be tuned to the inner tongue so that one can concentrate on the Supreme Name. The inner eye has to focused on the forehead because this is the place of manifestation of spiritual miracles.

Part 7: How does the soul get satisfied?
The answer to this question is captured in the following ta'wil:

Tawil of the word "Tatma'innu": It/he finds peace, satisfaction:
"Real satisfaction is that the friends of God receive in the form of inner observation, Divine vision, recognition, knowledge and wisdom, as a result of the dhikr of Ism-i Azam."
-- A Thousand Wisdoms, Tawil number 214, p.116.

This is represented by tier 3 in Fig. 1. In this stage, the soul is purified and reconciled.

Part 8: How is the Ism-i Azam actualized and perfected for Ismailis?
The answer to this question is captured in the following ta'wil:

Tawil of the word "Qalb-i Salim": Sound heart:
"In verse (26:89) is mentioned qalb-i salim, the sound heart which is meant a heart which has been illumined with the light of Imamat. In the case of such a mu'min, the Imam himself becomes his heart."
-- A Thousand Wisdoms, Tawil number 697, p.370.

This is represented by tier 4 in Fig. 1. In this stage, the purified and reconciled soul is illumined by the highest form of intellect, i.e., the NOOR (Light) of Imamat.

:: Candle Posting #75 :: Imamim Mubin :: Manifesting Imam ::

Bismillahir Rahmanir Rahim
In the name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful.

Ya Ali Madad! In this posting, I would like to first present knowledge on the tawil of Imamim Mubin because we recite this phrase in the second part of our Holy D'ua with the following words: Wa kulla shay-in ahsaynahu fee imamim mubeenin. I will then present concepts of guidance and enlightenment which are related to Imamim Mubin.

Part 1: Ayat from the Holy Qur'an

The Arabic text, transliteration, and S. V. Mir Ahmed Ali's translation of ayat 36:12 is as follows:

Arabic Text:
Transliteration:
"Inna nahnu nuhyee almawta wanaktubu ma qaddamoo waatharahum
wakulla shay-in ahsaynahu fee imamim mubeenin" (Holy Qur'an 36:12)

Translation:
"Verily We (and) We (alone) give life unto the dead, and We write down what they have sent before them and (even) their footprints (which they leave behind them): And everything have We confined into a Manifesting Imam (Guide)."
(Mir Ahmed Ali's translation)

Credit: http://www.sacred-texts.com/isl/quran/03601.htm for Arabic text and transliteration of ayat 36:12.

Part 2: Inner Meaning (Tawil) of Imamim Mubeenin

"The Fifth Holy Imam Muhammad ibne Ali Al-Baquir says that when this verse was revealed, there were Abu-Bakr and Umar who asked the Holy Prophet. "O Apostle of God! Is the 'Imamim-Mubeen' the Torah, the scripture given to Moses?" The answer was "No!" Again they asked "Is it Injeel, i.e., the Evangel given to Jesus?" Again the answer was "No!" Then they asked "Is it the Holy Qur'an?" Again "No" was the answer and then turning towards Ali-ibne-Abi-Taleb, the Holy Prophet said "Verily this is that ('Imam', i.e., guide) in whom God has contained the knowledge of everything." Then addressing the people present there, the Holy Prophet said "O group of men! There is no branch of knowledge which God did not bestow on me and I have conveyed that knowledge to Ali—Verily God has contained in me knowledge and I have contained it in Ali." This statement corroborates the renowned tradition of the Holy Prophet: "I am the City of Knowledge and Ali is its Gate."

Part 3: Means of Guidance

"...The Holy Prophet was the guardian and guide of the religion of God, but he, by the command of God, also kept the fountainhead of knowledge, wisdom and guidance continuing forever in this world by the means of the heavenly Book (i.e., the Holy Qur'an) and the true Imam. This means that the guidance of the Imam of the time is that of the Prophet and his (i.e., the Prophet's) guidance is that of God, as it is clear from this verse (25:31): "And your Lord is sufficient as a guide and helper." The purpose of this wisdom-filled teaching is that the system of guidance which God has ordained for mankind according to His sunnat (law) and habit acceptable to Him and praised here. And that system is that His guidance and help always continue by means of the True Guides. Thus, it is certain that the guidance of the Prophets and Imams is the guidance of God, because it is they who are commanded by and merged in God (Wasil bi'llah)."
Source: True Vision, p. 22

Part 4: The Role of the True Imam

"By the abode of the Prophets and Imams is meant spirituality and luminosity, and it is necessary for mu'mins to enter this today or tomorrow, for it is not necessary to enter their house in a physical form. This is certain, from example of Salman-i Farsi that, at the time of Prophethood there were others like him who entered the house of light of the Ahl-i bayt, which consisted of the Holy Prophet, Mawla Ali, Hazrat Bibi Fatimah, Imam Hasan and Imam Husayn, even though their names are not mentioned. For the Imam is the living path of religion for this purpose. That is, the Imam is the straight path, the guide, and the gate of the city of spirituality as well, so that he can help the mu'min reach the desired destination."
Source: Fruit of Paradise, p. 181

Part 5: Where Did Salman-i Farsi Reach?

"At the battle of the Trench, the Holy Prophet said: "Salman is from us, the Ahl-i bayt." What should we make of this saying? Are the master and slave as close as they appear to be? From this wisdom-filled Hadith can we say that Salman-i Farsi was annihilated in the light during his lifetime? He could see his own pure soul merged into the origin in both pre-eternity and post-eternity (in the state in which there is neither space nor time). All this was attained by him because the ocean of love for the Prophet and the Imam surged in his heart and he could see the luminous world within himself. Hidden in his heart were the precious treasures of knowledge and recognition of God."
Source: Fruit of Paradise, p. 145

Part 6: Where can Mu'mins go in this Day and Age?

"The Hadith related to Salman-i Farsi provides a clear example of the fact that mu'mins can link themselves with the light by hard work, high ambition, devotion, sacrifice and true love. That is, with their inner eye they are able to see how their higher "I" is eternally merged and linked to the origin. To achieve this is difficult but not impossible, and the Qur'an mentions this possibility in the verse related to Hazrat Ibrahim: "So, whoever obeys me, is surely of me." (14:36), i.e., whoever walks the path that I have walked, will truly discover the secret of how he is my spiritual and luminous child. Thus, it is a fact that like Salman-i Farsi, whoever wishes to, can join his eternal relationship with light and he can also sever the link like Kan'an (Hazrat Nuh's son) did."
Source: Fruit of Paradise, pp. 145-146

Part 7: What is the Real Heart of Man?

"The real heart of man is the exalted Imam, whom the Wise Qur'an has called qalb-i salim (26:89; 37:84) and qalb-i munib (50:33) which is in reality the higher "I". That is, the heart which is submitted to God and returned to Him. If a trial has become an obstacle between man and his heart (i.e., the Imam), then in order to overcome this and reach the heart (i.e., the Imam), he needs knowledge and good deeds."
Source: Fruit of Paradise, p. 178

Part 8: Tawil of Habl Allah (Rope of Allah, Imam of the time)

"God has sent the rope of His holy light from the higher world to the inhabitants of the lower world for the purpose that they may all together hold it fast so that they may be lifted to the higher world (Holy Qur'an 3:103). Externally the luminous rope of Allah is the holy personality of the Imam of the time and internally it is his ever-reaching light. The holy light of the Imam of the time comes to you specially through the ism-i azam (the supreme Name). Thus the Imam within (batin) you is the rope of Allah in the position of ism-i azam, to which you have to hold fast in such a way that all faculties of the heart and the mind are turned towards and centered upon it."
Source: A Thousand Wisdoms, Tawil No. 264, pp. 142-143.

May Noor Mowlana Shah Karim Al-Hussaini Hazir Imam (a.s.) grant all members of the global Jamat the inner vision of the truth through ism-i azam. Ameen.

:: Candle Posting #76 :: The Fundamental Role of Imamim Mubin in Our Spiritual Journey ::

Bismillahir Rahmanir Rahim
In the name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful.

Ya Ali Madad! On the occasion of Idd-e-Navroz please accept our heartfelt felicitations! May Mowla grant peace, prosperity, happiness, barakat, higher spiritual enlightenment, spiritual & luminous tayid (help) and empowerment to you, your family, your Jamat and the worldwide Jamat in the New Year. Ameen.

Let us first reflect upon the card which was prepared in 2005 by (the late) Alwaez Rai Amiraly Amlani:

Explanation of artwork: This beautiful card has a verse of ginan by Pir Sadardin. The Holy Pir has used the analogy of rejuvenation of vegetation in spring to the enlightenment of soul. The soul is buried in our physical body and is yearning to go back to its origin where it can be eternally alive. Insight into the scope of this long journey is given through the following tawils.

Part 1: Tawil of Dhâhib (Goer: A spirited person)

"It is mentioned in verse (37:99): "And he said: Verily, I am going to my Lord, He will guide me." On this blessed verse there is a great light and a great secret unveiled for the people of knowledge. That is, Islam is the religion of nature, namely, the religion of progress externally and internally. Therefore, it is necessary to act upon the shari'at in the true sense and then to reach tariqat, haqqiqat and the desired destination of ma'rifat. Thus, this is meaning in the firm resolve of a great muwahhid (believer on One God) such as Hazrat Ibrahim: "I am going to my Lord." "
Source: A Thousand Wisdoms, Tawil No. 351, p. 190.

Part 2: Tawil of Khalil (Intimate friend)

"According to Imam Ja'far as-Sadiq, God made Hazrat Ibrahim His servant ('abd) before making him a Prophet (nabiyy) and made him a Prophet before making him a Messenger (rasul) and made him a Messenger before making him an intimate friend (khalil) and made him an intimate friend before making him an Imam. (al-Kafi, I, 329; al-Mizan, I, 276: see also Translation of the Qur'an, by Maqbul Ahmad, p.22)."
Source: A Thousand Wisdoms, Tawil No. 325, pp. 173-174

Part 3: Tawil of Dhâhib (One who follows path of religion)

"The path of religion is the progressive ladder of the order of nature which is the example of the spiritual ladder as well as the example of the straight path and the rope of God. The wisdom-filled allusion of it is that as long as the world of unity is far away there are ranks on ranks: there are ranks of knowledge of the Qur'an, there are ranks in the deeds of Islam, there are ranks in the spiritual journey and proximity of God. Thus it is true that there are four major destinations of religion, namely, shari'at, tariqat, haqqiqat and ma'rifat and it is also true that Hazrat Ibrahim went to his Lord walking from one destination to another on the path of religion."
Source: A Thousand Wisdoms, Tawil No. 355, pp. 192-193.

Part 4: Tawil of Sabab (Rope, means)

"Internally the Qur'an and 'itrat (ahl-i bayt = Imam) are the same one light which is like a rope or ladder between the heaven and the earth, and this is also the straight path. The rope is extended from the supreme heaven to the earth, so that people may reach the Lord of the Throne through this rope or ladder of knowledge and recognition. This is the most marvellous as well as the most understandable example. Thus, when an arif (one who is seeking marifat) gradually progresses upwards, at every level he see the Qur'an and the Imam on the form of one Light. He sees the upper end of this luminous rope even in the presence of God, which is both the great Qur'an and the manifest Imam."
Source: A Thousand Wisdoms, Tawil No. 418, pp. 228-229.

Part 5: Tawil of Sâdiqin (The truthful ones, those who are given Qur'anic wisdom)

"It is said in verse (9:119): "O you who believe! Fear God and be with the truthful." This wisdom-filled verse is revealed about the Imams from the progeny of the holy Prophet. The truthful are those only in whose forehead there is manifestation and miracle of the revealed light. Thus, it is the holy Imams who have the truthfulness and reality of the Qur'an and Islam (Da'aim, I, 21)."
Source: A Thousand Wisdoms, Tawil No. 493, pp. 263-264

Part 6: Tawil of Sirat mustaqim (Luminous path)

"It is said in verse (11:56): "Verily my Lord is on the straight path." That is, the representative of God (the Imam of the time) is the path of luminous knowledge and guidance from the beginning to the end. And this is the tawil of the straight path."
Source: A Thousand Wisdoms, Tawil No. 501, p. 267

Part 7: Tawil of Sirat mustaqim (The living path of luminosity)

"Another example of the straight path is an ark, because the ahl-i bayt of the Prophet are compared to Hazrat Nuh's Ark. In this case the great secret is revealed that the straight path in reality is he who in his luminosity, carries the inner and spiritual travellers and makes them reach the ultimate destination. And this is a bright example of the True Guide."
Source: A Thousand Wisdoms, Tawil No. 502, p. 267

Part 8: Tawil of Dabbah (Animal, including man)

"It is said in verse (6:38): "Then in the presence of their Lord they will be gathered." The gathering (hashr) of the people of the world is first in the form of particles in the world of particles (aalm-i dharr), which is in the True Imam. Then there are examples of ranks. Then at the rank of singularity, all of them will gathered in the form of the Single Soul. This means that the people of paradise will first be in different ranks, and will gradually enter the sacred Sanctuary and become united only in One luminous body (haykal-i nur). This is the tawil of hashr."
Source: A Thousand Wisdoms, Tawil No. 331, p. 179-180

Synthesis:
On this auspicious day of Navroz, we now have a clear picture of the role of Imamim Mubin in our spiritual journey, which starts from this material world of multiplicity, through the worlds of spirituality (souls) and luminosity (lights) into the world of Oneness, where all realities merge into Monoreality.

Please may I request you to reflect deeply on the following? On a sunny day, when you look outside through the window of your office, house or apartment, you see that the sun is shining. With respect to spirituality, inshallah, one day the spark of light, which may be the size of a mustard seed at the present, will become the Real Luminous Sun and shine inside each one of us! After we recognize the Noor within ourselves, we get a chance to visit the spiritual houses of the Holy Ahl-i Bayt, just as Hazrat Salman-i Farsi did in the time of our Holy Prophet Muhammad (s.a.s.). Therefore, let us assess our relative position on the spiritual ladder and think of ways to recognizing our own souls first. Then, and only then, we will be empowered to enter into the luminosity of Noor Mowlana Hazir Imam, the Nuh's Ark of our time! Navroz Mubarak!

May Noor Mowlana Shah Karim Al-Hussaini Hazir Imam (a.s.) grant all members of the global Jamat the inner vision of the truth through ism-i azam. Ameen.

:: Candle Posting #77 :: Material Intelligence and Spiritual Enlightenment ::

Bismillahir Rahmanir Rahim
In the name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful.

Ya Ali Madad! Let us first study the following excerpts of the Platinum Jubilee speech Noor Mowlana Sultan Muhammad Shah Al-Hussaini (a.s.) and then learn more on the topic of spiritual enlightenment:

Part 1: Material Intelligence and Spiritual Enlightenment

"But, as I have explained in my Memoirs for the whole world to understand there are two worlds - the world of material intelligence and the world of spiritual enlightenment. The world of spiritual enlightenment is fundamentally different from the world of material intellectualism and it is the pride of the Ismailis that we firmly believe that the world of spiritual enlightenment has come as a truth from the inception of Islam to this day with the Imamat and carries with it as one of its necessary consequences love, tenderness, kindliness and gentleness towards first, our brother and sister Muslims of all sects and, secondly, to those who live in righteousness, conscience and justice towards their fellow men. These religious principles of Ismailism are well known to you for you have heard them from me and through your fathers and grandfathers and from my father and grandfather until I fear that by long familiarity with these teachings some of you forget the necessity of re-examination of your heart and religious experience.

But, as I started by telling you, there is also the world of matter and intellect which go side by side with reason and deductive and inductive powers. I have never, as you say in your own address, neglected to encourage schools and universities, and by welfare societies for the health of children, maternity, and more and more up to date needs that you may have, as far as it is possible in the areas in which you live, to get both mental and physical training that will make you capable of meeting the more and more difficult conditions of life and competition... "And I pray that you may live in peace, and with spiritual enlightenment to guide you."

Part 3: Wisdom-Teaching Advices (1)

"O the light of my eyes! O my dear! You should make a habit of the vigil of the night for the sake of the remembrance of God and 'ibadat (bandagi), ans dive in the ocean of love and annihilation through luminous ways of supplication in the court of God, the Provider of needs, so that the mirror of the heart may be cleansed and God willing, you may see the manifestations of the higher world in it and as a result, the heavenly love may be firm."
Source: Manifestations of Wisdom, pp.45-46

Part 4: Wisdom-Teaching Advices (2)

"O my spiritual brothers and sisters! Just as birds have two wings, your spiritual bird (soul) also has two wings. One of them is ibadat (bandagi) and the other, of knowledge. Just as the birds use their wings frequently in search of sustenance, you too should use your two wings of knowledge and ibadat (bandagi) frequently, so that you may have sustenance in the form of tayidi (given or inspired) knowledge."
Source: Manifestations of Wisdom, p.46

Part 5: Wisdom-Teaching Advices (3)

"O friends of the Ali of the time! Just as daily physical food is a necessity for the subsistence of the body, remembrance, ibadat (bandagi), knowledge and wisdom are necessary for the subsistence of the soul and the intellect, respectively. You also know that in comparison of the physical bounties, spiritual and intellectual bounties are far greater, sweeter and more superb. This is why the earthly and heavenly angels are always engaged in remembrance and ibadat (bandagi), knowledge and there are enlightened thereby."
Source: Manifestations of Wisdom, p.51

Part 6: How can a Mu'min become an Angel?

"The blessed farmans of the light of Imamat are full of guidance concerning spiritual progress. In short, it is the mu'min who can become an angel through obedience, ibadat (bandagi) and true knowledge. Some of the characteristics of angels are:
  1. perfect obedience (16:50),
  2. fear of God (16:50),
  3. humility (21:19),
  4. abundant remembrance of God and ibadat (bandagi) (21:20),
  5. knowledge and wisdom (40:7),
  6. well-wishing and prayer for mu'mins (40:7),
  7. service (help) and friendship of the people of faith (41:31, 58:22)."
Source: Sweet Smelling, p.55

Part 7: Scientific progress vs. spiritual revolution

"God says: "Soon We will show them Our signs in the external world and in their own souls until it becomes manifest to them that He is the Truth" (41:53). In this Divine teaching which is full of the wisdoms of matter and soul, is not only the prophecy of today's scientific progress and of glad tidings of tomorrow's spiritual revolution, but it is alluded on this verse that scientific miracles will appear first and then will come the cycle of spiritual miracles so that by reflecting upon these miracles, people will attain the happiness of the recognition of self and that of God."
Source: Fruit of Paradise , p.67

Synthesis:
Ismaili professionals are now present in all walks of life and have successfully implemented scientific methods in their work. In Qur'anic terms, they have adopted to the external cycle (afaq). During the Silver Jubilee, Noor Mowlana Hazir Imam explained to us that there is no conflict between science and Islam, and science is only one of the ways of understanding the universe.

In the Platinum Jubilee address of Noor Mowlana Sultan Muhammad Shah (a.s.), the origin of concept of spiritual enlightenment of the soul was identified as founding principle laid down since the time of the first Imam, Noor Mowlana Murtaza Ali (a.s.). If Ismailis follow the guidance of the Holy Imams, they can become leaders in the cycle of spiritual revolution through higher spiritual enlightenment. In Qur'anic terms, this internal cycle of the soul is called anfus. The pattern of knowledge will shift from scientific discovery (afaq) to subtle discoveries of the soul (anfus). Currently, material science methods are becoming more subtle, less invasive and more powerful day by day, however, the spiritual science methods are even more subtle and powerful. Therefore, higher spiritual enlightenment will take human beings to a higher level of knowledge. Look at the foresight of our Holy Imams for bringing these concepts in front of us! Al-Hamdulillah!

May Noor Mowlana Shah Karim Al-Hussaini Hazir Imam (a.s.) grant all members of the global Jamat the inner vision of the truth through ism-i azam. Ameen.

:: Candle Posting #78 :: Spiritual Kingdom of Mu'mins ::

Bismillahir Rahmanir Rahim
In the name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful.

Ya Ali Madad! In this posting, I would like to address the topic of spiritual kingdom of mu'mins. I will start with a verse of ginan and then follow up with teachings of Noor Mowlana Murtaza Ali (a.s.) and tawils of verses from the Holy Qur'an.

Part 1: Pir Hasan Kabirdin's Supplication

Eji Aash tamari shri ho kayam sami
saheb chinta kije Ya Shah
sab gatiye Shah ke khade re umayo
shah raj rikisar ghar dejo

O Lord! We cherish our hopes in You,
so keep us in your care and thoughts, O Lord!
All Jamats stand before You with enthusiasm and supplicate:
O Lord! favor the believers with the (spiritual) kingdom.
1
A few questions arise from the above verse: What is a spiritual kingdom and how can mu'mins achieve this? Let us begin the study these topics through the teachings of Noor Mowlana Murtaza Ali (a.s.).

Part 2: Teachings of Noor Mowlana Murtaza Ali (a.s.)

"Your medicine is hidden in you but (alas!)
you do not understand it,
And your sickness is from yourself but
you do not see it.
And you think that you are a small body,
while the greater universe is contained in you.
And you are that speaking book,
from whose letters reveal the hidden secrets."
(Diwan-i Hazrat Ali)

Explanation:
"You can cure yourself, but, for that, true knowledge is necessary. Because it is extremely necessary to know that, that sickness, in fact, is not external but internal. You have understood that you are an ordinary and small body, due to which your sense of responsibility has become limited and therefore, you have suffered a great loss.

Contrary to this, if you were sure that there is a universal kingdom hidden in you, all your potentialities would be actualized and you would not have suffered this loss. For, unless someone realizes the importance and benefit, and worth and value of a thing, he does not pay attention to it, nor does he struggle for its progress and upliftment. If you had died spiritually before the physical death, you would have become the speaking book of your deeds, which abounds in the secrets of recognition (ma'rifat)."

Source: Qur'anic Healing, p.78

From the above quotation, it is clear that a spiritual kingdom in hidden in the personal world of each and every human being. As it is not physically visible, we tend to ignore it. This is contrary to the great supplication of Pir Hasan Kabirdin (r.a.) in which the Holy Pir prays for a spiritual kingdom for each and every mu'min. Our goal should be to transform our status from a murid (a simple follower) to a mu'min (a faithful and enlightened believer).

Part 3: How is it possible for all to become Kings?

"In this world, in any country where there is monarchy, only one can be king and the rest are his subjects. It is, therefore, logical to ask: How were all the mu'mins of Hazrat Musa (a.s.) made kings (5:20)? In answer to this, I would say that the wisdom of this verse is related to the personal world (microcosm), in which through annihilation (i.e., merging into the Noor), every mu'min can become a spiritual king. This kingdom is given by God to the progeny of (Hazrat) Ibrahim (a.s.) and progeny of (Hazrat) Muhammad (s.a.s.), so that the people may annihilate themselves in the embodied light of the time (i.e., merge into the Light of the Prophet or the True Imam) and attain this kingdom of the Hereafter, because in Paradise, it is this kingdom which is called the great kingdom (76:20). Reflect well: What is the kingdom of this world and what will be the kingdom in Paradise!"
Source: Coolness of the Eye, p.36

Part 4: What do Mu'mins have to achieve in this life time?

"The gift of making kings is not confined to the time of Hazrat Musa (5:20), but the mu'mins of every Prophet (and Imam) can attain spiritual kingdom. However, in order to attain it, there are certain conditions, by fulfilling which, the mu'mins will attain ma'rifat in this life and the kingdom in the next world. For the mu'min cannot be a slave in Paradise, rather, by grace of God, he will be a king (2:247; 3:26; 76:20)"
Source: Healing Through Knowledge, pp. 149-150

It is quite clear that mu'mins have to acquire angelic characteristics in this life time. These were described in Candle Posting No. 77, part 6.

Part 5: How did Hazrat Salman-i Farsi achieve a Spiritual Kingdom?

Let us study the tawil of 'Mulk' (Kingdom) and relate it to achievements of Hazrat Salman-i Farsi:

"Here it should be noted that the purpose of the glorious praise of Hazrat Ibrahim's progeny in verse (4:54) is that recognition of the holy prophet and his progeny. The verse reads: "Indeed, We have given to Ibrahim's children the Book and wisdom and We have given them a great kingdom." Try to annihilate yourselves in them like Salman-i Farsi, so that you be able to inherit the Book, the wisdom and a great kingdom, Ameen!"
Source: A Thousand Wisdoms, Tawil No. 848, p.444

Part 6: What are the rewards of a spiritual death while we still alive?

"In the Godhead of God, where there are universals, there are also particulars. Thus if Hazrat Izra'il, may peace be upon him, by the command of God, can make a perfect person or a sufi or a mu'min revive in the true sense by (spiritually) martyring him in this very life, before the physical death (57:19), then such people while living in this physical life, attain the status of martyrdom in the sight of God and they attain reward and light, not only in the Hereafter, but also in this life. And this bliss is also partially attainable by other mu'mins, too. Thus the sacrifice of life, that is, the act of Hazrat Izra'il (39:42), is in stages as well as all at once."
Source: Qur'anic Healing, p.77

Part 7: On what occasions is the soul seized?

"The work of Hazrat Izra'il is extremely miraculous and full of wisdom. He seizes the soul on five occasions:
  1. As a result of successful 'ibadat (bandagi) and dhikr of God in the heart of a mu'min, his soul is partially seized in the sense that some worn-out particles of soul are expelled and some fresh particles are brought in.

  2. The same event takes place when a mu'min sheds tears, implores and prays in the court of the Lord of Honor due to a calamity, hardship or sickness.

  3. It happens during the state of sleep. That is to say in this state, the exchange of soul, or seizing of soul, takes place repeatedly. Therefore, in order to attain (and retain) good soul (particles), it is necessary to wake up on time, lest these go away in this exchange (39:42).

  4. When a (living) darwish-like mu'min, in his spiritual progress, enters the station of the resurrecting death, he experiences a complete spiritual death (3:143).

  5. When the time of external and physical death comes, the soul is seized finally and completely."
Source: Qur'anic Healing, pp.77-78

Part 8: How do angels help to achieve a magnificent spiritual death?

"This rare point should be well remembered that Jibra'ili cure is done with knowledge, Mika'ili cure by wisdom, Israfili cure by giryah-u zari (supplication) and Divine love, and Izra'ili cure by effacement (removal of sins) and annihilation (in the sense of merging the soul into the Light and then reviving it with a greater strength). The last one is the effective cure. For the perfect taqwa (piety) and complete purification lies only in a magnificent (spiritual) death happens to soul in this life. And this is a very great miracle, for in it is observed, not only the scene of death, but also a glimpse of the next life."
Source: Qur'anic Healing, p.143

May Noor Mowlana Shah Karim Al-Hussaini Hazir Imam (a.s.) grant all members of the global Jamat the inner vision of the truth through ism-i azam. Ameen.

:: Candle Posting #79 :: What is the Source of and the Cure for Waswasâh? ::

Bismillahir Rahmanir Rahim
In the name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful.

Ya Ali Madad! In this posting, I would like to address the topic of waswasâh (insinuation). Noor Mowlana Hazar Imam (a.s.) raised this term when he asked the students of Religious Night School on 9th November, 1967 in Mumbai the meaning of the word "waswâss" from Surah Nâs (Surah 114). A spiritual child answered in Gujrati "waswasâh". Mowlana Hazar Imam was pleased with the answer and encouraged the students to learn more about other Surahs of the Holy Qur'an.

Islamic as well as esoteric Ismaili spirituality is based of the grades and states of the soul. In this respect, it is important to examine the concept of waswasâh in a greater detail. Let use begin this process by studying the following questions and answers:

Part 1: What is waswasâh (insinuation)?

"Waswasâh in Arabic mean the jingle of an ornament; a light footfall; to speak softly; to speak nonsense due to insanity; an evil suggestion which occurs in the heart; a bad or useless thought which occurs in the heart. In technical language of the Shariat, it means the seduction, temptation, dissuasion from good and persuasion to bad by the devil. From this, it is certainly clear that the waswasâh or insinuation of the devil as the root of all diseases, therefore, to cure it means to prevent all physical and spiritual diseases."
Source: Healing Through Knowledge, p.74

Part 2: What is the main cause of waswasâh?

"There is no doubt that it is the sneaking devil (khannas) who is among the jinn and mankind (114:4-6), who instills waswasâh in the hearts of people. But this matter does not end here, for it is a background and also a main cause, which is nafs-i ammarah or the carnal soul. It is the carnal soul, which in reality, creates waswasâh and always commands to do evil (50:16; 12:53). In this carnal soul, there is hidden power, which acts as the personal devil of each individual. This is alluded to in the verse (43:36), which has been explained in a Noble Hadith (Mishkat, Vol. I, p.42). The gist of the explanation is that, every individual has a personal devil, whose reformation is possible and necessary to do."
Source: Healing Through Knowledge, p. 74.

Part 3: How can the commanding soul be cured?

"The Wise Qur'an has not only warned man of the waswasâh and the deception of the carnal soul and the devil, but has also taught the method, through which a mu'min can obtain a cure from this disease, as it is said: "He indeed is successful who purified it (soul) and he indeed failed who buried it in debauchery (wickedness)." (91:9-10). You can understand that so many deeds of religion are enjoined for the sake of the purification of the soul, because without it, there is no success for a mu'min. It is clear in the Noble Qur'an that spiritual and intellectual (at the level of Light) purification of mu'mins is possible through knowledge and wisdom (2:129, 151; 3:164) and in order to attain this exalted place, the true obedience of God and the Prophet is indispensable, without which nobody can conceive of true knowledge and wisdom."
Source: Healing Through Knowledge, pp. 74-75.

Part 4: What are the ranks of soul?

"There are many stages of the soul, with respect to its ethical and spiritual reformation, refinement, progress and elevation. According to the law of comprehensiveness, the Holy Qur'an has mentioned three great ranks which comprise all these stages. Thus, in first few stages, the human soul is called ammarah or commanding (12:53), which means the one which persistently commands for the gratification of his (material) desires. Fortunately, if enough progress is made in the reformation and purification of it (nafs-i ammarah), then it becomes transformed in the nafs-i lawwamah, or the censuring soul (75:2), which comprises the intermediary stages. By nafs-i lawwamah is meant that soul which accuses itself again and again. That is to say that, in view of subtleties, niceties and intricacies of the path of God, this perfect awareness, complete realization, ardent yearning, strenuous struggle and constant endeavour for His proximity is highly pleasing, therefore, He swears by this soul (nafs-i lawwamah) in the verse (75:2)."
Source: Healing Through Knowledge, p.75

Part 5: What is nafs-i mutama'innah (satisfied soul)?

"If by Divine providence, this (Divine) help and guidance continues, then comes the third stage, which consists of the final stages of spiritual progress, in which the soul of a mu'min, who walks on the path of spirituality, becomes transformed into the satisfied soul (89:27). Such a soul has attained satisfaction according to the standard of God (3:126; 5:113; 8:10; 13:28; 2:260; 17:95), as God says: "O the satisfied soul! return to your Lord, well pleased (with Him), well-pleasing (Him), so enter My (chosen) servants, enter My paradise (87:27-30). This final and supreme bliss is attainable by the Friend of God, not only after death in the next world, but can be perfectly experienced in this world."
Source: Qur'anic Healing, pp. 75-76.

All the above ranks of the soul are presented in Fig. 1 shown below:

Fig. 1. The ascent of the soul and its spiritual and intellectual resurrection.

Part 6: How does the devil work?

"The Holy Qur'an has also said that false fear is a ruse (trick) of Satan, for God says: "It is only Satan who frightens you with his friends" (3:175). Regarding false fear, the question whether such fear arises in the animal (carnal or commanding) soul or whether it is from Satan is answered by the fact that the Satan works through the carnal soul, or in other words, another guise of Satan is the animal soul."
Source: Fruit of Paradise, p.28

Part 7: What is the cure of false fear?

"One of the Qur'anic medicines for the disease of false fear is abundant remembrance of God and another is the light of true knowledge by which it is cured permanently. This means that jinni (invisible) Satan is chased away by the remembrance of God and the human Satan is defeated by true knowledge. It is taught that, in order to protect oneself from the stoning of Satan, one should seek the presence and proximity of God, the ta'wil of which is protect oneself in the luminous knowledge of the Imam of the time."
Source: Fruit of Paradise, pp. 28-29

Part 8: How does one obtain the Holy Imam's luminous knowledge?

"God says: "And he who is blind to the remembrance of God, We assign unto him a Satan who becomes his comrade." (43:36). The pure Imam is the living Supreme Name (ism-i azam) of God and His luminous remembrance, because it is from him that mu'mins obtain the light of Divine remembrance (through bandagi), which rescues them from the clutches of Satan. For the Imam of the time is in the position of Ali and is the gate to the city of knowledge and wisdom."

The above concept is beautifully captured in the following verse of ginan from Pir Hasan Kabirdin's Moti Venti:
Eji Sâmi tamârâ nâmnê partapê kari
jâu saragaj mâ(n)hê
tyâ(n) ketlâk chor âdâ bêthâ
tê tamârâ nâmthi aragâ thâya

mahêr karo morâ sâ(n)hiyâ
abarâ sharan tamâri

0 Lord, With the blessings of your (sacred) name (ism-e azam),
I can reach paradise.
However, I am ambushed by thieves (satans)
(who steal my concentration).
On hearing your (sacred) name (ism-e azam), they will flee.

Have mercy on me, my Lord.
I am helpless and dependent on you.

May Noor Mowlana Shah Karim Al-Hussaini Hazir Imam (a.s.) grant all members of the global Jamat the inner vision of the truth through ism-i azam. Ameen.

:: Candle Posting #80 :: Wisdoms from Surah Falaq (Holy Qur'an 113:1-5) ::

Bismillahir Rahmanir Rahim
In the name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful.

Ya Ali Madad! In posting No. 79, I addressed the topic of waswasâh (insinuation) and cited references to two Surahs of Holy Qu'ran, namely Surah Falaq (The Daybreak) & Surah Naas (Mankind). In this posting, I would like to present wisdoms (tawils) for Surah Falaq, Surah No. 113 of the Holy Qur'an. The transliteration and translation of this Surah is as follows:

Surah Falaq (The Daybreak): Holy Quran 113:1-5
Transliteration
English Translation
Bismillahir Rahmanir Rahim In the name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
1. Qul 'a-'uuzu bi-Rabbil-Falaq, Say: I seek refuge in the Lord of the Daybreak
2. Min-sharri maa khalaq; From the evil of that which He created,
3. Wa min-sharri gaasiqin 'izaa waqab, From the evil of the darkness when it is intense,
4. Wa min-sharrin Naffaasaati fil 'uqad, And from the evil of malignant witchcraft,
5. Wa min-sharri haasidin 'izaa hasad. And from the evil of the envier when he envieth.

Part 1: Wisdoms from the first ayat

"In the Suratu'l Falaq, first comes the word qul (say!), which is mentioned 332 times in the Glorious Qur'an. This is a special command of God, because in it He addresses the Holy Prophet: O Prophet! tell the people personally and also through other means. That whatever the Holy Prophet presented to the people during his pure life, by words and deeds, is under the Divine command "qul". Further, the execution of this command also continues through the two important things (i.e., the Holy Qur'an and the speaking, present and living Imam of the Age), which the Prophet has left for the sake of guidance.

Then there is the word "a'udhu (I seek refuge)", in which is sought for three things: first, the intention; second, the speech; and third, the action. And the most successful form of refuge for all of these is possible in the light of knowledge and ma'rifat (recognition of the Light of God) for without faith and certainty, intellect and wisdom, it is not possible to reach the refuge of God by escaping every kind of evil and to protect oneself there.

Then come the words "Bi-Rabbi'l-falaq (with the Lord of dawn)". That is, I seek refuge in the presence of the Lord of the pre-eternal dawn (subh-i azal). Although there are many dawns, the most worthy mentioning and extremely marvellous, is the one which dawn with the rise of the pre-eternal light (nur-i azal). For the true protection of God is attained by a fortunate servant at the stage where he comes annihilated in God (fana fi'llah). At this stage he observes the secrets of pre-eternity and post-eternity together."

Part 2: Wisdoms from the second ayat

" "Min sahhri ma khalaq (from the evil which is created)". In this verse, to take refuge from all evils, is mentioned tersely. That is to say, what is mentioned in detail in the Suratul-Falaq and Suratu'n-Naas is summarized in the above-mentioned two verses. From the preceding, it is evident that it is the falaq, namely spirituality and the dawn (light) of pre-eternity, which erases the darkness of all evils and puts an end to them."

Part 3: Wisdoms from the third ayat

" "Wa min sharri ghasiqin idah waqab (and from the evil of the dark night when it overspreads". Ghasiq is an active principle which means that which spreads darkness. By this is meant a person who spreads darkness of ignorance. Such a person is more dangerous than the dark night. For the more the good is in knowledge and wisdom, the more evil is in ignorance. Thus, according to the law of seeking refuge, it is necessary and essential to escape the ignorant and the ignorance and seek God's refuge. "

Part 4: Wisdoms from the fourth ayat

" "Wa min sharri'n-naffathatti fil-uqad (and from the evil of those (women) who blow on knots)". The tawil of this is that Lord of command (sahib-i amr), with respect to religion and imparting knowledge, is in the rank of man and the rest are in the rank of woman (See Wajh-i Din, chapter 46). Just as in witchcraft women blow on knots and bewitch people, the ulama (learned) opponents of the Lord of command, who as women in religion, muddle the simple teachings of religion and make complicated issues out of them, and by doing so they intend that the people be compelled to believe that it is only they who know the solution of such knotty issues and thus they lead people astray from the recognition of the true Imam. This from the evil of these religious bewitchers also, refuge must sough in the light of Imamat."

Part 5: Wisdoms from the fifth ayat

" "Wa min-sharri haasidin 'izaa hasad (And from the evil of the envier when he envies". That is, when the Prophet or the true Imam successfully guides mu'mins in the illumination of the light of guidance, then their enemies envy them and use every kind of deceit and trick. At such times which are extremely dangerous, mu'mins should also seek refuge in the guidance of the light of Imamat from its danger and evil."

Part 6: What weapon is the Satan afraid of?

"The best and most powerful weapon of a mu'min which the Satan is in constant fear is the remembrance of God, therefore, he is always trying to cause the mu'min to forget God's remembrance, so that he may attack him (58:19).

The tawili wisdom of this verse is that the Name of God and His remembrance are the Imam of the time, who is the fountainhead of all physical and spiritual forces of mu'mins. Therefore, the physical and spiritual devils (6:112) always chase those mu'mins who are weak in faith and knowledge, to cause them to loosen their grip of the blessed hem of the pure and holy Imam.

This the greatest weapon of spirituality and knowledge of a mu'min and this is the tawil of forgetting the remembrance of God, because of the Satan."
