:: Candle Posting #61 :: New Insights into Balancing Din with Duniya ::

Bismillahir Rahmanir Rahim
In the name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful.

Ya Ali Madad! Ramadan Mubarak! On this ninth night of Holy Ramadan which started on Saturday evening, August 29, 2009, let us reflect deeply on the following sayings of NOOR Mowlana Murtaza Ali (a.s.) which have been extracted from a book entitled 'Peak of Eloquence NAHJUL BALAGHA'—Sermons, Letters and Sayings of Imam Ali ibn Abu Talib, published by Tahrike Tarsile Qur'an, Sixth U.S. Edition 1996. In today's posting, let us examine the following gems of wisdom on the topic of Din and Duniya:

  1. Amir al-mu'minin, peace be upon him, said:
"This world is a place for transit, not a place to stay. The people herein are of two categories. One is the man who sold away his self (to his passions) and this ruined it, and the other is the man who purchased his self (by control against his passions) and freed it."
    Quotation number 133, page 598.

  2. Amir al-mu'minin, peace be upon him, said:
"There are two kinds of workers in the world. One is a person who works in this world for this world and his work of this world keeps him unmindful of the next world. He is afraid of destitution for those he will leave behind but feels himself safe about it. So, he spends his life after the good of others.

The other is one who works in this world for what is to come hereafter, and he secures his share of the world without effort. Thus, he gets both the benefits together and becomes the owner of both the houses together. In this way, he is prestigious before Allah. If he asks Allah anything He does not deny him."

    Quotation number 279, page 634.

  3. Amir al-mu'minin, peace be upon him, said:
"I wonder at the miser who is speeding toward the very destitution from which he wants to run away and misses the very ease of life which he covets. Consequently, he passes his life in this world like a destitute, but will have to render an account in the next world like the rich.

I wonder at the proud man who is just a drop of semen the other day and will turn into a corpse tomorrow. I wonder at the man who doubts Allah although he see sees His creations. I wonder at him who has forgotten death although he sees people dying. I wonder at him who denies the second life although he has seen the first life. I wonder at him who inhabits this transient abode but ignores the everlasting abode."

    Quotation number 126, page 596.
In this month of reflection, let us put these wisdoms in context of current teachings of NOOR Mowlana Hazir Imam (a.s.):
  1. "But make faith part of your everyday life. Let not there be a day where you forget your faith. Faith has become in certain societies a matter of convenience and you attend your faith when a child is born, when an individual passes away but any other engagement in your faith disappears in front of the materialism of the modern world. And I want to say to my spiritual children, let that never happen to the murids of my Jamat."
    London, July 5th, 2008

  2. "He who forgets soul is unhappy, this you will see everyday around you." Pakistan, 1964
Ardent Supplications for Holy Ramadan:
Ya Ali, Ya NOOR Mowlana Shah Karim Al-Hussaini Hazir Imam, create Sunshine in our hearts, light in our foreheads, and bless us all with the inner vision of the Truth!

Ya Ali, Ya NOOR Mowlana Shah Karim Al-Hussaini Hazir Imam, grant the global Jamat luminous (noorani) and spiritual (ruhani) tayid (help) to advance materially, spiritually and intellectually. Ameen.

:: Candle Posting #62 :: Precious Guidance About Livelihood ::

Bismillahir Rahmanir Rahim
In the name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful.

Ya Ali Madad! Ramadan Mubarak! On this fourteenth night of Holy Ramadan which started on Thursday evening, September 3, 2009, let us reflect deeply on the following sayings of NOOR Mowlana Murtaza Ali (a.s.) which have been extracted from a book entitled 'Peak of Eloquence NAHJUL BALAGHA'—Sermons, Letters and Sayings of Imam Ali ibn Abu Talib, published by Tahrike Tarsile Qur'an, Sixth U.S. Edition 1996. In today's posting, let us examine the following gems of wisdom on the topic of livelihood:

  1. Amir al-mu'minin, peace be upon him, was asked about destiny, when he said:
"It is a dark path—do not tread upon it, it is a deep ocean—do not dive in it, and it is the secret of Allah—do not take trouble about (knowing) it."
    Quotation number 297, page 640.

  2. Amir al-mu'minin, peace be upon him, said:
"Know with full conviction that Allah has not fixed for any person more livelihood than what has been ordained in the Book of Destiny, even though his means (of seeking it) may be great, his craving for it intense and his efforts for it acute; nor does the weakness of a person or the paucity (lack) of his means stand in the way between what is ordained in the Book of Destiny and himself. He who realizes it and acts upon it is the best of them all in point of comfort and benefit; while he who disregards it and doubts it exceeds all men in disadvantages. Very often a favoured person is being slowly driven (towards punishment) through those favours; and very often an afflicted person is being done good through his affliction. Therefore, O listener, increase your gratefulness, lessen your haste and stay within the bounds of your livelihood."
    Quotation number 283, page 638.

  3. Amir al-mu'minin, peace be upon him, said:
"O son of Adam, livelihood is of two kinds: the livelihood which you seek and the livelihood which seeks you; if you don't reach it, it will come to you. Therefore, do not turn your one day's worry into a year's worry. What ever you get every day should be enough for you for the day. If you have a whole year of your life even then Allah, the Sublime, will give you every next day what He has destined as your share. If you do not have a year in your life then why should you worry for what is not for you. No seeker will reach your livelihood. Similarly, whatever has been destined as your share will not be delayed to you."
    Quotation number 389, page 659.

  4. Amir al-mu'minin, peace be upon him, said:
"Livelihood is of two kinds: the seeker and the sought. Therefore, he who hankers after this world death traces him till it turns him out of it; but he who hankers after the next world, worldly ease itself seeks him till he receives his livelihood from it."
    Quotation number 126, page 596.
In this month of reflection, let us put these wisdoms in context of teachings of NOOR Mowlana Sultan Muhammad Shah Al-Husayni (a.s.):
  1. "Allah the Merciful shall give abundance to those who are virtuous. All prosperity cometh not in a day but gradually and slowly. God makes such people prosperous in their properties and progeny. For a day shall come why they shall rise high."
    Zanzibar, September 5, 1905

  2. "To achieve worldly prosperity is necessary but it is more essential to excel in spiritual progress. To attend to the worldly business is incumbent but the affairs of the next world are important than this. This should never be forgotten."
    Nairobi, March 30, 1945.
Key Insights:
  1. Please note that Mowlana Sultan Muhammad Shah (a.s.) has emphasized that the affairs of next world are more important than those of this world. Therefore, as we have to balance din and duniya, din needs to be addressed first so that duniya finds its appropriate place. If we give duniya a first priority then it takes over and virtually eliminates the din.

  2. Ordinary people go after duniya for material comforts while mumins toil in this world to gain the next world. However there is a great secret and blessing in the activities of the mumins. According to the sayings of Noor Mowlana Murtaza Ali (a.s.), ease of the world is given to these mumins because they are staunch in seeking the next world through their submission of dasond, and regularity in the practice of dua and bandagi.

  3. The most astonishing aspect of these quotations is the teaching that livelihood is of two kinds: the livelihood that we seek and the livelihood which seeks us. Those people who focus on the spiritual dimension of our religion are blessed because livelihood seeks them and comforts also reach them.

  4. The material prosperity of the Jamat is barakat of the Holy Imam which gets activiated through dasond, dua and bandagi of mumins. Their continual activity turns the wheel of the cycle of well wishing for the whole Jamat. Therefore, it is incumbent for all us to join in this effort in order to bring peace, happiness and prosperity the global jamat, the ummah and humanity at large! This is an integral part of the Ismaili ethos!

Ameen.

Thursday Evening, September 3, 2009 :: Fourteenth night of Holy Ramadan

:: Candle Posting #63 :: Lail-tul Qadr and the Power of Ism-i Azam ::

Bismillahir Rahmanir Rahim
In the name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful.

Ya Ali Madad! Ramadan Mubarak! On this twenty third night of Holy Ramadan which started on Saturday evening, September 12, 2009, let us reflect deeply on the following tawils on the topics of Lail-tul Qadr, bandagi and ism-i azam:

  1. Tawil for the word 'Ahsan' (The very best):
"In verse (39:23) there is the praise of the Holy Qur'an externally and of ism-i azam internally, because the chosen ones of God remember Him by His ism-i azam internally, which is "ahsanu'l-hadith (the best speech)", and is from God. It is a book full of ta'wil (wisdom) which is read repeatedly and by its regular dhikr, the bodies of those who fear God tremble, then their bodies and hearts become tender and tend to the miraculous dhikr (bandagi) of Allah."
Source: Tawil No. 30, A Thousand Wisdoms, pp.33-34

  2. Tawil for the word 'Yursilu' (He sends/will send):
"It is said in verse (71:11): "He will send you the heaven showering abundant rain." That is, by the command of God, the light of Imamat will appear in your heart (through bandagi), by the blessing of which the rain of spiritual knowledge will continue to pour upon you."
Source: Tawil No. 979, A Thousand Wisdoms, pp.509-510

  3. Tawil for the word 'Yudriku' (He obtains, catches, overtakes):
"It is said in verse (6:103): "Eyesights cannot attain Him but He attains (all) eyesights." That is, it is not possible for the human eyesight to see Him, but He Himself becomes the eyes of the 'arifs, as mentioned in the sacred hadith of nawaafil (supererogatory acts) that God becomes the eye of His friend."
Source: Tawil No. 977, A Thousand Wisdoms, p.509

  4. Tawil for the word 'Yatim' (Unique):
"You on your own will not be able to go close to the spiritual knowledge of the Imam, except through ism-i azam. Then in your personal world you have to work hard and serve the Imam from spiritual childhood to full youth."
Source: Tawil No. 966, A Thousand Wisdoms, p.504

  5. Tawil for the words 'Ya'juj wa Ma'juj' (The army of the Lord of the Time):
"It is said in verse (21:96): "Until, when Gog and Magog are let loose, and they will hasten out of every elevated place." That is, the atomic army or the army of (spiritual) particles will come out of the Imam and all other hudud under him and accomplish the work of spiritual jihad and inner resurrection."
Source: Tawil No. 961, A Thousand Wisdoms, p.502

  6. Tawil for the words 'Ya'juj wa Ma'juj' (Spiritual Army):
"The attack of Gog and Magog becomes a source of mercy and blessings for the those who, through special knowledge, good deeds, permission and the discipline of vigil (bandagi) have been able, by the grace of God, to bear the bitterness of voluntary death and the severity of personal resurrection, and obtain the precious treasures of spirituality and intellectuality. As for the rest, the exalted Imam prevents Gog and Magog or the army of (spiritual) particles from attacking them."
Source: Tawil No. 963, A Thousand Wisdoms, pp. 502-503

Key Insights:
  1. In order to understand the Holy Qur'an, it is first necessary to study it externally. However, in order to understand the wisdom of the Holy Qur'an, the only door is bandagi. There is no other short cut.

  2. An assessment of what can be learned with ism-i azam is given in the first ayats of Surah 'Alaq: The Clot (Surah No. 96):

"Proclaim! (or read!) in the name (ism-i azam) of thy Lord and Cherisher, Who created — Created man, out of a (mere) clot of congealed blood: Proclaim! And thy Lord is Most Bountiful, — He Who taught (the use of) the pen, — Taught man that which he knew not."

  3. The Holy Imam, the Lord of present (zaman) and eternal time (asr), has a spiritual army which is used to build the personal spiritual world of mumins. However, this grace is given to only those who are blessed with special knowledge, perform good deeds, have the permission through ism-i azam and practice bandagi regularly.

  4. The fundamental message for this Lail-tul Qadr is to make a commitment to perform bandagi regularly. In this way every night becomes a Lail-tul Qadr. Then with the power of bandagi, we would have the strength to tirelessly serve the Imam of the time and meet his expectations of the nazrana of time and knowledge.
Ardent Supplications for Holy Ramadan:

Saturday Evening, September 12, 2009 :: Twenty third night of Holy Ramadan

:: Candle Posting #64 :: Noor Mowlana Murtaza Ali's (a.s.) Insight on Idd ::

Bismillahir Rahmanir Rahim
In the name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful.

Ya Ali Madad! Ramadan Mubarak! On this twenty eighth night of Holy Ramadan which started on Thursday evening, September 17, 2009, let us reflect deeply on the following sayings of NOOR Mowlana Murtaza Ali (a.s.) which have been extracted from a book entitled 'Peak of Eloquence NAHJUL BALAGHA'—Sermons, Letters and Sayings of Imam Ali ibn Abu Talib, published by Tahrike Tarsile Qur'an, Sixth U.S. Edition 1996. In today's posting, let us examine the following gems of wisdom on the topics of Idd, purity, charity, generosity, Zakat, prayers and gratitude.

  1. Amir al-mu'minin, peace be upon him, said on the occasion of an Idd (Muslim feast day):
"It is an Idd for him whose fasting Allah accepts and for whose prayers He is grateful; and (in fact) every day wherein no sin of Allah is committed is an Idd."*
    Quotation number 437, page 666.

*If feeling and conscience is alive even the remembrance of sin destroys peace of mind because tranquility and happiness are achieved only when the spirit is free from the burden of sin and one's robe is not polluted with disobedience. And this real happiness is not bound by time, but on whatever day a man desires he can avoid sin and enjoy this happiness, and this very happiness will be the real happiness and harbinger (i.e., indicator) of Idd.

  2. Amir al-mu'minin, peace be upon him, said:
"It is not that Allah, to Whom belongs Might and Majesty, may keep the door of gratitude open for a person and close the door of plenty to him, or to open the door of prayer to a person and close the door of acceptance upon him, or to open the door of repentance on a person and close the door of forgiveness upon him."
    Quotation number 444, page 668.

  3. Amir al-mu'minin, peace be upon him, said:
    "Seek livelihood by giving alms."
    Quotation number 137, page 599.

  4. Amir al-mu'minin, peace be upon him, said:
"He who is sure of a good return is generous in giving."
    Quotation number 138, page 599.

  5. Amir al-mu'minin, peace be upon him, said:
"Protect your belief by charity; guard your wealth by paying Allah's share; and ward off the waves of calamity by praying."
    Quotation number 146, page 600.

  6. Amir al-mu'minin, peace be upon him, said:
"Even if Allah had not warned of chastisement on those disobedient to Him, it would be obligatory by way of gratefulness for His favours that He should not be disobeyed."
    Quotation number 300, page 641.

Key Insights:
  1. Idd ul-Fitr is a great day of happiness for all Muslims because it comes after the month of Ramadan—a month of ardent prayers, fasting and reflection. Noor Mowlana Murtaza Ali (a.s.) teaches us that to abstain from committing sins is also an Idd. Thus, a devout mum'in creates a consciousness which is focused on the pleasure of God. This method virtually eliminates the acts through which sins are committed.

  2. We should do our best to show gratitude to our Holy Imam who has spent his whole life for our material, spiritual and intellectual upliftment. For practical purposes, gratitude is measured by the degree of obedience, thus it is a good idea to listen or read firmans and assess the degree of one's obedience.

  3. We can also use the following yardstick from the Holy Qur'an:

"Those who show patience, firmness and self-control; who are true (in word and deed); who worship devoutly; who spend (in the way of God); and who pray for forgiveness in the early hours of the morning." (3:17)

Ameen.

:: Candle Posting #65 :: Idd Mubarak :: Tawil of Dua-e-Qunut ::

Bismillahir Rahmanir Rahim
In the name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful.

Ya Ali Madad! Idd Mubarak! On the most aupicious occasion of Idd-ul Fitr, please accept our heartfelt felicitations. May Allah grant material, spiritual and intellectual happiness to Muslims all over the world, and to all those who have submitted their wills to He Who is Above All Else. Ameen.

On this happy occasion, SalmanSpiritual.com would like to present to the global Jamat an article entitled, "An Esoteric Interpretation (Tawil) of Dua-e-Qunut which is recited in Idd Namaz". Click here to download the PDF version.

The Dua-e-Qunut is recited 5 times in the first rakat and four times in the second rakat of Idd Namaz. The Dua-e-Qunut in the Idd Namaz is translated as follows:

Our Lord! Grant us good in this world, as well as good in the world hereafter, and protect us from the torment of the (hell) fire with Thy kindness, O Benevolent of the benevolents. O my Lord! I am vanguished, so please help, on this auspicious day, which Thou has granted as the festival of Idd to the followers of Islam.

There is no deity but Allah, the Nobel, the Wise. There is no deity but Allah, the Great , the Most High.

Praise be to Allah, the Lord of seven heavens and the Lord of seven earths and whatever is in them and between them, and the Lord of the Glorious Throne. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the Universe'.

Allah is the Greatest.

Background:
There are multiple Tawil of Dua-e-Qunut. In this posting, I have applied tawil of this Dua to the personal world. Each human being is a personal world. The development of the personal world starts with firm belief and practice of faith. This leads to the purification of soul and the sacrifice of the nafs-i amara (the soul which commands to do evil). When a person sacrifices the nafs-i amara, he or she becomes spiritually alive - a shahid in the real sense. The shahid then interacts with angels who open the World of Spirituality (Malakut) and teach about the purification of the soul. The angels then teach the shahid about a luminous world called Jabrut. Everthing in Jabrut is learned through the science of Perfect Names and Perfect Words of God (Ism-i Azam and Kalamat-i-Tamat). In Jabrut, the shahid witnesses the great miracles of the Intellect at the level of Light (Noor). Finally, from this stage the shahid enters the World of Oneness where he/she will be shown the miracles pre-eternity and post-eternity in his/her own personal world. When shahid achieves this stage, he/she becomes the truthful one with enlightened, satisfied soul. The shahid becomes the truthful one because he/she has seen the World of Command (Be and it is!) and experienced Monoreality (a place where all realities become one reality). This stage is also called the abode of eternal peace (Dar-as-Salaam), and is fountain from which all peace originates and returns as described in the second paragraph of the second part of our Holy Du'a.

With this background, I interpret the Dua-e-Qunut as follows:

Text:

Esoteric Meaning:
Our Lord! Grant us good in this world as well as good in the world hereafter in our personal worlds and and protect us from the torment of the (hell) fire of ignorance of higher realities in our personal world with Thy kindness, O Benevolent of the benevolents. In other words, bless us with the light of faith and intellect so that we can see the reality of everything in our personal world. We invoke your name because you are very Kind.

O our Lord! We are vanguished in our personal worlds by the nafs-i amara, so please help us to overthrow this terrible ruler. We pray that you become the Master of our personal worlds, by the barakat of this auspicious day, which Thou has granted as the festival of Idd after the trials of the month of Ramazan to the followers of Islam. O our Mowla, help us to overthrow the terrible ruler and restore your command in our personal worlds by the barakat of this Idd.

Text:
'There is no deity but Allah, the Nobel, the Wise. There is no deity but Allah, the Great, the Most High.'

'Praise be to Allah, the Lord of seven heavens and the Lord of seven earths and whatever is in them and between them, and the Lord of the Glorious Throne. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the Universe.'

Esoteric Meaning:
O our Mowla, praise be to you because you have created the earth of our personal worlds in our souls and you have created the heaven of our personal worlds in our Intellects. You know each and everything about our personal worlds. O Merciful Mowla, establish Your Throne in our foreheads so that we may see the mastery of everything which you have created (externally and internally) within our personal worlds.

There is no doubt that 'Allah is the Greatest.' Through this phrase, we are also invoking Allah and his great archangel, Hazrat Izrail (a.s.) to build our Personal Worlds through exchange and activation of particles of soul in our personal worlds. This great angel, with the command of God, can also enrich each particle of soul with Light as described in the following prayer of Imam Jafar al-Sadiq (a.s.):

'O Allah! Make me a light in my heart, and a light in my ear, and a light in eye, and a light in my tongue, and a light in my hair, and a light in my skin, and a light in my flesh, and a light in my blood, and a light in my bones, and a light in my nerve, and a light in front of me, and a light behind me, and a light on my right side, and a light on my left side, and a light above me and a light below me.' (Daa'imu'l-Islam, Vol. I, Dhikr after the salat).

:: Candle Posting #66 :: Insights on the Topic of Knowledge ::

Bismillahir Rahmanir Rahim
In the name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful.

Ya Ali Madad! Let us reflect deeply on the following sayings of NOOR Mowlana Murtaza Ali (a.s.) which have been extracted from a book entitled 'Peak of Eloquence NAHJUL BALAGHA'—Sermons, Letters and Sayings of Imam Ali ibn Abu Talib, published by Tahrike Tarsile Qur'an, Sixth U.S. Edition 1996. In today's posting, let us examine the following gems of wisdom on the topic of knowledge.

  1. Amir al-mu'minin, peace be upon him, said:
"Every container gets narrower according to what is placed in it except knowledge which expands instead."
    Quotation number 205, page 612.

  2. Amir al-mu'minin, peace be upon him, said:
"Whoever takes account of his self is benefited, and whoever remains neglectful of it suffers. Whoever fears remains safe; whoever takes instruction (from things around) gets light; and whoever gets light gets understanding, and whoever gets understanding secures knowledge."
    Quotation number 208, page 613.

  3. Amir al-mu'minin, peace be upon him, said:
"Knowledge dispels the excuse of those who advance excuses."
    Quotation number 294, page 640.

  4. Amir al-mu'minin, peace be upon him, said:
"When Allah intends to humiliate a person He denies him knowledge."
    Quotation number 298, page 640.

  5. Amir al-mu'minin, peace be upon him, said:
"Be afraid of the ideas of believers, because Allah, the Sublime, has put truth on their tongues."
    Quotation number 319, page 644.

  6. Amir al-mu'minin, peace be upon him, said:
"Knowledge is of two kinds — that which is absorbed and that which is just heard. The one that is heard does not give benefit unless it is absorbed."
    Quotation number 348, page 651.

  7. Amir al-mu'minin, peace be upon him, said:
"There are some creatures of Allah whom Allah particularizes with favours for the benefit of people, therefore He keeps these in their hands so long as they give them to others; but when they deny them to others He takes away the favours from them and send them to others."
    Quotation number 434, page 666.

Key Ahadith:
  1. Knowledge of religion:

It is said in a Hadith:
"He whom God wills a good (thing), He grants him the understanding of religion." (Tirmidhi, V, 28)
    (Tawil 604, A Thousand Wisdoms, page 321)

  2. Seeker of Knowledge:

It is said in a Hadith:
"Gods clears a path to paradise for the one who follows a path seeking knowledge. And the angels lay down their wings for the pleasure of the seeker of knowledge. As for the learned (âlim), whoever is in the heavens and the earth, including fish in the water seek forgiveness for him, and the excellence of the learned one over the worshipper (âbid) is like that of the moon over all the stars". (Tirmidhi, IV, 48-49)

:: Candle Posting #67 :: Knowledge and Conviction of Three Types of People ::

Bismillahir Rahmanir Rahim
In the name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful.

Ya Ali Madad! Let us reflect deeply on the following sayings of NOOR Mowlana Murtaza Ali (a.s.) which have been extracted from a book entitled 'Peak of Eloquence NAHJUL BALAGHA'—Sermons, Letters and Sayings of Imam Ali ibn Abu Talib, published by Tahrike Tarsile Qur'an, Sixth U.S. Edition 1996. In today's posting, let us examine and reflect deeply the following gems of wisdom on the topic of three types of people.

The following quotation is the conversation of NOOR Mowlana Murtaza Ali (a.s.) with Kumayl ibn Ziyad an-Nakhai who was the holder of the secrets of the Imamat and one of the chief companions of Amir al-Mu'minin. He held a great position in knowledge and attainment and a loft place in abstinence and Godliness. He was Amir al-Mu'minin's Governor of Hît for sometime. He was killed by al-Hajjaj ibn Yusuf ath-Thawafi in the year 83 A.H. at the age of ninety years and was buried outside Kufah.

This is a long conversation and I am presenting it in its entirety so that we can learn about those people who are ones whom the Holy Imams yearn to see!

"Kumayl ibn Ziyad has related: Amir al-Mu'minin, peace be upon him, caught hold of my hand and took me to the graveyard. When he passed through the graveyard and left the city behind, he breathed a deep sigh and said:

"O Kumayl, these hearts are containers. The best of them is that which preserves (its contents). So, preserve what I say to you.

People are of three types: One is scholar and divine. Then, the seeker of knowledge who is also on the road of deliverance. Then (lastly) the common rot who run after every caller and bend in the direction of every wind. They seek not light from the effulgence (i.e. brightness) of knowledge and do not take protection of any reliable support.

O Kumayl, knowledge is better than wealth. Knowledge guards you, which you have to guard wealth. Wealth decreases by spending, while knowledge multiplies by spending, and results of wealth die as wealth decays.

O Kumayl, knowledge is belief which is acted upon. With it man acquires obedience during his life and a good name after his death. Knowledge is the ruler while wealth is ruled upon.

O Kumayl, those who amass wealth are dead even though they many be living while those with knowledge will remain as long as the world lives. Their bodies are not available but their figures (i.e., images) exist in the hearts. Look, there is a heap of knowledge (and Amir al-Mu'minin pointed to his bosom). I wish I could get someone to bear it. Yes, I did find (such a one); but either he was one who could not be relied upon. He would exploit the religion for worldly gains, or by virtue of Allah's favours on him he would domineer over the people and through Allah's pleas he would lord over His devotees. Or he was one who was obedient to the hearers of the truth but there was no intelligence in his bosom. At the first appearance of doubt he would entertain misgivings in his heart.

So, neither this not that was good enough. Either the man is eager for pleasures, easily led away by passions, or is covetous for collecting and hoarding wealth. Neither of them has any regard for religion in any matter. The nearest example of these is the loose cattle. This is way that knowledge dies away with the death of its bearers.

O my Allah! Yes; but the earth is never devoid of those who maintain Allah's pleas either openly or reputedly or, being afraid, as hidden in order that Allah's pleas and proofs should not be rebutted. How many are they and where are they? By Allah, they are few in number, but they are great in esteem before Allah. Through them Allah guards His pleas and proof till they entrust them to others like themselves and sow seeds thereof in the hearts of those who are similar to them.
Knowledge has led them to real understanding and so they has associated themselves with the spirit of conviction. They take easy what the easygoing regard as hard. They endear what the ignorant take as strange. They live in this world with their bodies here but their spirits resting in high above. They are vicegerents of Allah on His earth and callers to His religion. Oh, oh, how I yearn to see them!"

(Quotation number 147, page 600-601)

Tawils of the word 'Salmân':
  1. Salmân (A name) :

It is said in a Hadith: "Salmân is from us, the ahl-i bayt." This Hadith alludes to the fact that mu'mins of the first rank, male or female, can also be included in ahl-i bayt."
    (Tawil 448, A Thousand Wisdoms, page 241)

  2. Salmân (Salmânu'-khayr) :

    1. Salmân was an exemplary mu'min of the time of Prophethood.
    2. Salmân is proof of the verse of the sound heart (26:89).
    3. He became one of the doors of paradise.
    4. The sacred light of holy ahl-i bayt had arisen in the personal world of Salmân.
    5. In the time of every Imam, some pure mu'mins (men and women) become like Salmân-i Fârsi.
    (Tawil 450, A Thousand Wisdoms, page 242)

  3. Salmân (Salmân as an 'âlim of given knowledge) :

When the Commander of the faithful Mawla Ali was asked about Salmân, he said: "He is given the first knowledge and the last knowledge, and that which he has, cannot be grasped." (Tabaqât, IV, 85). The Imam also said: "He has the knowledge of the first ones and ths last ones." (Sirat-i Salman, p. 155)
    (Tawil 452, A Thousand Wisdoms, page 243)

Let us pray and act to become first category pure mu'mins like Salmân-i Fârsi in the time of our present and living Imam, NOOR Mowlana Shah Karim Al-Hussaini (a.s.).

:: Candle Posting #68 :: Insights into Loyalty and Real Inner Sacrifices ::

Bismillahir Rahmanir Rahim
In the name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful.

Ya Ali Madad! Postings 59, 66 and 67 were developed from the Sayings of NOOR Mowlana Murtaza Ali (a.s.) and have shed light on the topics of knowledge, conviction and action of different types of people. The following is a sufi story taken from the book entitled "When you hear hoofbeats think of a zebra" by Shems Friedlander (pages 70-72). Before we start reading the story, let us learn some definitions:

Sufi: An Islamic mystic

Sheikh: Spiritual head, teacher of a dervish order.

Dervish: Follower of a Sufi Path.

Let us first read the story and then do a self-assessment:

"At the time of the Ottoman Empire in Turkey, one of the viziers told the sultan about a great sheikh who lived in Anatolia. He warned the sultan to be careful of this sheikh, because he had hundreds of thousands of followers. And if this sheikh decided to turn against the sultan, the whole country could be in turmoil and he could even lose his throne.

The sultan got quite concerned. He sent for the sheikh to come to Istanbul. When they met, the sultan said, "What is this I hear, you have hundreds of thousands of dervish followers?"

"No, that is not so," the sheikh answered.

"Well, how many do you have? the sultan insisted.

"I have one and a half."

"If you have one and a half, why is everyone telling me that you have the power to overthrow this entire country? We shall see. There's a huge field at the edge of the town and tomorrow everyone is going to meet at that field."

The sultan sent out messengers to announce that anyone who was a follower of this great sheikh should come to this field the next day, because the sheikh would be there.

Above the field there was a hill where the sultan set up a huge tent. Inside the tent he put several sheep, but no one could see this.

The next day hundreds of thousands of people came to the field to see the great sheikh. In front of the tent the sultan stood next to the sheikh and said, "You said you didn't have many followers. Look at all these people who believe they're your followers."

"They are not," the sheikh said. I only have one and a half dervishes. You'll see."

"The sheikh has committed an indiscretion," the sultan said. "And unless ten of his dervishes give up their life for him, his life will be taken."

There was a great rumbling in the crowd. "He is my sheikh and teacher. Whatever I know came from him," one man came forward and said. "I will go and give my life for him."

The sultan's men marched him up the hill, took him into the tent, and slit the throat of a sheep. Everybody saw blood flowing from the side of the tent, and this made them very nervous.

The sultan declared, "Is there anyone else willing to give his life to the sheikh?"

Silence.

Then one woman stood up and said she would. They marched her up and into the tent, and again they slit the throat of another sheep. Seeing more blood, the crowd began to disperse. Soon there was no one left in the field.

The sheikh turned to the sultan and said, "You see, as I told you, I only have one and a half dervishes."

The sultan said, "Oh, the man is your dervish, and woman is half a dervish?"

"No, no" the sheikh said. "The woman is my dervish, and the man is half a dervish."

Seeing the surprised expression on the sultan's face, the sheikh explained: "The man did not actually know that he was going to be killed when he entered the tent. But the woman knew, and she still came forward. She is my real dervish."

That is (a great example) of loyalty ..."

Self assessment: If the sheikh was your true murshid, would you have gone?
If yes, why? If no, why not?

Real Inner Sacrifices:
  1. Dhibh (1): That which is sacrificed
"It is mentioned in verse (37:107): "And We ransomed him with a great sacrifice." That is, Hazrat Isma'il was sacrificed spiritually instead of his external and physical sacrifice, which in many senses was greater than his physical sacrifice. He was sacrificed in the dream, his soul continued to be seized for several days in a wakeful state, he attained the rank of martyrdom in spiritual jihad and he was repeatedly sacrificed at the place of intellect as well." (A Thousand Wisdoms, Tawil No. 356, p. 193)

  2. Dhibh (2): That which is sacrificed
"Hazrat Ismail was the Permanent Imam and the asas. His intention and worship in the above-mentioned sacrifices were for God and their spiritual benefits were for the people. This is because the Imam, on behalf of God, is always present in this world so that he may accomplish for the people of the world, those useful deeds which they themselves are not able to do. An example of this is the spiritual sacrifice, which is not possible for everyone to accomplish." (A Thousand Wisdoms, Tawil No. 357, p9. 193-194)

  3. Dhibh (3): That which is sacrificed
Question: "How do the people of the world benefit from the inner sacrifices of the exalted Imam? Is there any such allusion in the Qur'an?"

Answer: "The wisdom-filled allusion of the Qur'an says the Imam of the time is not only the Imam of the righteous (Imamu'l-muttaqin, 22:74), but the Imam of the people (Imamu'n-nas, 2:214) as well. However, the great difference is that, the door of (spiritual) knowledge and wisdom opens instantly (in this world) for the righteous, whereas for the masses it is closed in this world." (A Thousand Wisdoms, Tawil No. 358, p. 194)
Synthesis:
Each one of us has to the sacrifice nafs-i amara (the commanding soul symbolized by a sheep or an ox) with the practice of dhikr and bandagi so the doors to the spiritual and luminous worlds open up. Real success lies in making the inward journey from the physical world through the spiritual and luminous worlds into the world of oneness under the guidance of the True Imam. This path also leads to the creation of Sunshine in one's heart and a Golden Noorani Didar in one's forehead.

Prayer without action becomes pride. Good actions, piety, submission of dasond and enlightenment generate fuel within ourselves which would propel our souls into the spiritual and luminous worlds. Therefore, let us act and pray to become first category pure mu'mins like Salmân-i Fârsi in the time of our present and living Imam, NOOR Mowlana Shah Karim Al-Hussaini (a.s.).

:: Candle Posting #69 :: Idd Mubarak and Tawil of Selected Qur'anic Terms

Bismillahir Rahmanir Rahim
In the name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful.

Ya Ali Madad and Idd Mubarak. On the occasion of Idd-ul-Adha, may Allah grant material, spiritual and intellectual happiness to Muslims all over the world, and to all those who have submitted their wills to He Who is Above All Else. Ameen.

Let us reflect on the tawil of selected important words which appear in Hadith and the Holy Qur'an:

  1. Rajim: Primary meaning: One who stones and is stoned
"This is derived from rajm (to stone) on the pattern of fa'il (grammar) in the sense of both active principle "stoning" and passive participle "stoned". In a secondary sense it also means "cursed". Satan is called rajim in the sense that his work is to stone by false and incorrect discourses, so that a mu'min who is weak in true knowledge may be frightened by it and become his victim, or die with respect to soul of faith or suffer from doubt. This is the esoteric wisdom. But exoterically, people neither know the stoning Satan, not do they feel the pain of his stoning."
    A Thousand Wisdoms, Tawil No. 379, p. 206

  2. Rizq: Sustenance
"It is said in verse (2:25): "And whoever will be given fruits as food, they will say: This is what was given to us before." Three kinds of nourishment can be received in the world: physical, spiritual and intellectual (in form of light). Physical nourishment is the one in which mu'mins, disbelievers and animals share equally. Spiritual and intellectual nourishment is special for the people of faith. It is the nourishment which is given in paradise, but in the most excellent and superb form."
A Thousand Wisdoms, Tawil No. 388, pp. 210-211

  3. Rih Yusuf: The fragrance of Yusuf, i.e., spiritual fragrance
"Hazrat Ya'qub said: "I get the fragrance of Yusuf." (12:94). Hazrat Yusuf was the Imam. One of the spiritual miracles of the Imam is the manifestation of spiritual fragrances." (This barakat speeds up the process of purification of the soul and is a great sign of spiritual progress)
    A Thousand Wisdoms, Tawil No. 399, p. 215

  4. Raqim: Inscription, writing
"One of the spiritual marvels and wonders is that sometimes writing appears in front of the inner eye. This surely is an allusion to the fact that there are bounties in paradise in the form of writing, too (Holy Qur'an 18:9)."
    A Thousand Wisdoms, Tawil No. 392, p. 213

  5. Rahiq (1): Pure wine
"It is mentioned in verses (83:25-26): They will given to drink a sealed pure wine, the seal of which is musk." By sealed pure wine are meant spiritual words of the Qur'an, the Hadith and the Imam of the time, in which are hidden the wonders and marvels of wisdom and recognition, which are pleasant and soul-nourishing like sealed pure wine."
A Thousand Wisdoms, Tawil No. 386, pp. 209-210

  6. Rahiq (2): Pure wine
"Sealed pure wine is the given (or gifted) knowledge (ilm-i laduni), and the science of ta'wil (esoteric meaning) which is received from the perfect words and the hidden Book. Thus, it both the knowledge of the Imam as well as the wine of love for him. Just as worldly love awakens by drinking worldly wine, similarly, the vision of his knowledge is his light and is felt and perceived in many ways."
    A Thousand Wisdoms, Tawil No. 387, p.210

  7. Zulzilat: It was shaken
"The quake of a personal resurrection is mentioned in the surah of Zilzaal (99:1-8), which is a tremendous miracle of the personal world, whereby the sâlik is purified and hears spiritual conversation. The resurrection of all the representative particles of people takes place in a hidden way in the personal resurrection."
    A Thousand Wisdoms, Tawil No. 412, p. 223

  8. Râ'in (1): Shepherd, king, ruler
"It is said in a Hadith: "Each one of you is a shepherd and each one of you is accountable for his herd (on the Day of (personal) Resurrection)." Another translation: "Each one of you is a king (potentially) and each one of you is accountable for his subjects (on the Day of (personal) Resurrection)." That is, on the Day of (personal) Resurrection each one of you will be asked what did you do for your subjects. (Bukhari, Cairo, II, 6; Delhi, II, 8-9; Lughât, Râ, pp.95-96, Tirmidhi, IV, 208)"
    A Thousand Wisdoms, Tawil No. 371, p. 203

  9. Râ'in (2): Shepherd, governor, sovereign
"O my dear! You have understood the fact that there is a complete copy of the universe and the existents in the personal world of each individual. Thus, by the infinite mercy of God, every individual has potentially become a king whose subjects are in the entire world. However, it is now up to the people of faith to actualise the kingdom of their personal world through their knowledge and good deeds."
    A Thousand Wisdoms, Tawil No. 372, p. 203

  10. Râ'in (3): Shepherd, king
"In many Qur'anic verses and Ahadith it mentioned that obedient and successful souls will be kings in paradise. Those who will not be able to attain this status, will have done injustice to their personal world due to their ignorance and inaction or lack of good deeds.

O my dear! It is certainly a great favour of God to teach the realities and recognitions through the concept of the personal world. Therefore, there has been and continues to be great success in this method of teaching."

    A Thousand Wisdoms, Tawil No. 373, p. 204

:: Candle Posting #70 :: Idd-e-Gaddir Dhikr :: Ya Ali Tuhi Tu

Bismillahir Rahmanir Rahim
In the name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful.

Ya Ali Madad! Idd Mubarak on the occasion of Idd-e-Gaddir, the first Imamat Day of our first beloved Holy Imam, NOOR Mowlana Murtaza Ali (a.s.). On the occasion of this great spiritually uplifting event, SalmanSpiritual.com would like to present a special dhikr mp3 track entitled 'Ya, Ali, Tuhi Tu' which means 'O Ali, Only You are You'. In order to understand the depth of this title and dhikr, let us first explore the following concepts:

Part 1: Ta'wil of word 'Ayat' (The luminous personality of the Imam in which all signs are encompassed):

"Mawlâ Ali has said: "Anâ âyâtu'llâhi wa aminu'llâh, i.e. I am Allah's signs and I am the trustworthy of Allah." (Kawkab, p.208). Âyât in the sense of the signs of Divine power or miracles, are in four places: (i) The higher world, (ii) the wise Qur'ân, (iii) the external universe and (iv) the personal world, but according to the Qur'ân (36:12) all these âyât (signs) are encompassed in the light of the Imâm-i Mubin. That is, his light is the higher world, he is the speaking Qur'ân, the quintessence of the universe and a luminious personal world in true sense." [Source: Tawil 10: A Thousand Wisdoms]

From the above tawil, it is clear that our true and holy Imam has perfect, luminous intellect and he is the speaking, living light of God. This is the reason that we have performed his baiyat and have made a pledge to follow his firmans in all material and spiritual matters.

Part 2: Teaching of Pir Shams (r.a.)

In his ginan entitled 'Haq tu(n) Paak tu(n)', Pir Shams (r.a) has described the power of the Light of Eternal Ali as follows:
Hak tu(n) paak tu(n) baadshah
Maherbaan bhi Ali tu(n)hi tu(n)

You are the eternal truth, and You are the holiest divine being.
To You belong the dominion of the heavens and the earth.
Most gracious also are You,
O Ali, You and none else but You.
1
Rab tu(n) Rahemaan tu(n)
Ali awwal aakhar kaazi tu(n)hi tu(n)

You are the sustainer of all beings, and most merciful are You.
The beginning of all things is from You,
and the end of everything is unto You.
O Ali, You and none else but You.
